The Lost Queen’s Hotel

A horse-drawn streetcar passes the old Queen Hotel on Front Street in 1850.
Before the Royal York dominated Front Street, the Queen’s Hotel was Toronto’s crown jewel of hospitality. Originally built in 1844 as rowhouses, it became a luxury hotel in 1862 under Captain Thomas Dick. With 210 rooms, 17 parlours, and rare amenities like passenger elevators, bathtubs, and hot air heating, it was one of the most modern hotels in Canada. It hosted royalty, like the Prince of Wales, and was even a hub for Confederate sympathizers during the American Civil War. In 1927, it was demolished to make way for the Royal York Hotel, but its legacy lives on in the foundations of Toronto’s grand hotels.
